That, and the extreme pragmaticism combined with a weary knowledge of the world that does not fit into the rigid frames of everyday “normal”. What makes this book an utterly delightful piece of Holiday literature is the side story, involving a seven foot skeleton with a pillow shoved hobfather his Santa Hogfather outfit, riding through the sky on a pig drawn sleigh beside a stubbled, alcoholic ‘elf’ and a magical gift sack, with a plan to bring Hogfsther cheer to the land as best they can.
Of course, we’ve also got the Wizards running around messing with stuff the whole time.

His attempts to improve upon customs are great, especially the sequence at the Hogswatch Grotto in the “Maul” and his attempts to fairly redistribute wealth. It’s not as quippy or joke-heavy as some Discworld books, but what it lacks in goofery and wit, it makes up for in plot hofgather character and heart. Here is Death, trying to maintain faith in the jolly man in the red suit, Albert along to coach and play elf, while Susan is diverted from her job as a governess to try and hunt the down the missing big guy.
What Hogswatch seems to stand for is not that you will get presents if you have been nice, but that what you have done counts for something, and it is known. Fairness, when discussed between Death and Albert, is one of the high points in the entire Discworld universe and is an archetypal moment in his prose. I’ll admit that at times I don’t really understand what is going on in Pratchett books until the last pages or so.
Nowhere more so than in the Discworld where it’s helped to maintain the status quo.
uogfather I can imagine that prior knowledge is of great benefit as some scenes defy explanation by the uninitiated; Bloody Stupid Johnson’s shower is surely included to stop people hogfzther me from complaining that it wasn’t but Banjo’s affiliation to Teatime is vague are the examples that spring to mind. Why do some fairy tale characters still persist and others don’t? So why not believe in them in any case? I guess the next time I decide to read such a book, such as Charles Dickens ‘ A Christmas CarolI should time it so that I pragchett the book, a Terry Pratchett’s Christmas Special 5 January I started reading this book because I thought it was going to be a great book to read in the lead up to the festive season, however the only problem was that my timing was completely off — I finished it five days into the new year, which sort of defeats the purpose of reading a book for the festive season.
Aug 03, Lyn rated it really liked it. This accretion of magic can be accessed in many ways, but the overriding principle of why things happen on the Discworld is that the inhabitants BELIEVE they will happen.
Hell, let’s not nitpick, the casting is marvellous if only Steptoe had been there for Death’s Butler The voice of reason says it will rise, but there are many unreasonable voices in a person.

With these teeth, he is able to control all the children on the Discworld, commanding them to no longer believe in the Hogfather. I laughed, I groaned, I laughed some more, and then finally I decided that I prachett been missing out on a truly wonderful series of books.
This, as you can imagine, ends up causing some problems, because the whole idea of the Hogfather giving gifts actually isn’t to give the child what he wants, but what the economic situation stipulates. As Susan climb to the top of the tower, Teatime’s accomplices are devoured by their childhood fears, apart from Banjo, who turns on the Assassin and refuses to attack Susan.
