She knows the specifics of their lives–what kind of feaarful they like, how they brush their teeth, what they feel at 3 in the morning. I had lunch in a local cafe while Niffenegger was being interviewed about this book at the next table, and it made for GREAT eavesdropping, and I got hooked on the premise of this book.

One apartment belongs to Elspeth Noblin who dies on the first page of the book and bequeaths the apartment to her twin nieces in America, with the stipulation that they must live there for a year before selling and that their mother, Elspeth’s own twin, can never set foot in the apartment.

When the twins arrive in their new home they soon learn that they are not alone as it appears hsr Aunt Elspeth has never left.

In her long-awaited second novel, Her Fearful SymmetryNiffenegger angles in time’s stream once again, fishing for meaning. I felt like I was reading the book version of a campy Frankenstein movie. The woman Robert knows as Elspeth is actually Edie and the woman everyone knows as Edie is actually Elspeth.

She did make a slight error, however, in that he was an expert in old languages and she had him translating something Assyrian in Aramaic by which I assume she meant Syriac. Elspeth has bequeathed a sizeable sum of money and a huge mansion block apartment opposite Highgate Cemetery to twin nieces she has never met, year-old Americans Julia and Valentina Poole. I almost got the sense the twist was included as an afterthought, like it didn’t really fit in there.

Her Fearful SymmetryNiffenegger’s second novel, is set in London’s Highgate Cemetery where, during research for the book, Niffenegger acted as a tour guide. I hate plot summaries, that is what Amazon and book jackets are for, so audgey me synopsize. Meanwhile, their upstairs neighbor is struggling with OCD and a passionate love for his wife, who has left him because of it. I don’t like it.

This book is well worth reading BUT you really need to suspend disbelief and just go with the really wild premise. Valentina’s soul is removed and held by Elspeth. Julia isn’t sure that this is her dead sister; however, she has suspicions.
